Let's go into the sun...

Tomorrow, saturday december 22nd 2007, Natascha Badmann and Toni Hasler are travelling for this years first trainingscamp to Gran Canaria. Natascha will not be able to train a lot, but the sun and warmth she will enjoy for sure.

"Fondueplausch" with Natascha Badmann

A cosy evening, eating the legendary swiss fondue, with a visit from St Nicholas, has attract again many members to the christmas decorated farmyard. The funny stories of St Nicholas but also the nice presents have given a lot of pleasure.

The good healing process of Natascha allowed her to attend almost the whole evening.

Back home again -
but depending on help 

Natascha Badmann left the hospital and is back home again. But with both shoulders "packed" obviously she needs a lot of help from partner Toni Hasler.
Daily she attends the phyio-lessons in the Cross Klinik, where she can recall her motoric samples on the bike.

2nd surgery is done

Regarding the circumstances, Natascha Badmann is feeling quite good after the 2nd surgery. They had to fix two demolished tendons, one of them they first see during the operation. She is not allowed to move the right arm. The left arm, that she did surgery some weeks ago, she can use only very limited. That means, she can eat by herself, but to stand up she needs help. This week she will stay in the hospital.

From the party to the hospital

After the succesfull season-end party of the Toni Hasler GmbH yesterday, Natascha Badmann has to enter for the 2nd time the hospital today. At the party yesterday, Natascha received two talisman for the 2nd surgery tomorrow. Just let's hope that this are doing a good job, and that the surgery is going well.

Natascha Badmann - ready for the second operation

As already told, Natascha Badmann is training hard in the gym again. So she is already fit enough to get the second surgery. This monday, november 26th 2007, Natascha Badman will enter again the hospital to get the surgery on the right shoulder.

We hope everything goes well, just as in the first surgery.

The legs of Natascha are working already hard again

So, finally some more news on Natascha Badmann.

At home again, she receives a lot of help from trainer and partner Toni Hasler. As an example, he is only cooking what she can eat alone with only one arm. And she is already trainining again regular, by her visits in a gym, where she trains on the stepper or on the spinning-bike. Next week there will be rebuild her bike, so she can start to train on her roller at home.

Prevously she will be operated on her 2nd shoulder already at the end of november.

Otherwise she is set up and good courage, just as we know her...


2. November 2007
Back to training

Tomorrow saturday, november 3rd 2007, Natascha will leave the hospital after the succesfull surgery of her left shoulder. Her team will as fast as possible build a special construction for her so she can start to train again. Because the cycling in the hospital bed was not too succesfull, as she was sleeping after 30 min. ... ;-)

Natascha is already cycling again - in the hospital bed

The first surgery on the left shoulder is overcome. It was planned for 2 hours, but now they needed over 3 because more tendons were dismantled. But regarding the shoulder specialist the surgery was very good!

The biceps muscle and the tendons, which have been teard away from the bone, have been fixed agian with metal anchors.

Already now, 2 days after the surgery, she can held the arm close to the body. Yesterday in the first physio they moved the joint.

Natascha is very optimist, she is ok. She is doing a lot of mental work trying to suport the healing with positive pictures.

This morning she get already a bike, a special construction. With this she is able to move her legs in the bed. The upper body is inactiv, but the lower part of the body is already active again.

Regarding the medicals, within 3 to 4 weeks the left shoulder should be ok to move, so Natascha will get the second surgery on her right shoulder. But luckily there are less injuries.

Since yesterday afternoon Natascha Badmann is in the hospital, in the Cross Klinik in Basel. Today she will get surgery. Just let's hope the best...

Press orientation october 24th 2007

After her heavy crash at the Ironman Hawaii 2007 we finally got the specialist diagnoses. 

We take advantage of this deplorable occasion for a generell stocktaking: 

1. sportive stocktaking
Except this horror crash at the Ironman Hawaii the season 2007 was the best season ever of Natascha (now 40 years old). 

  • 6 races 6 victories 
  • Victory Ironman southafrica in march:
    over 25 minutes lead to the worldchampion in longdistance and a sensational 8th place overall!! With this it would have been the first time that a women has price money claim within the mansfield.
  • Worldrecord in the USA in summer:
    additionally Natascha set a new worldrecord at the Ironman 70.3 distance in the USA.
  • Ironman Hawaii 2007; Race
    Natascha was looking so much forward to this season highlight, as she was in an amazing shape, all her result of the races and trainings has shown that those have been even better than when she made the worldrecord.
  • swimming: Natascha was in compare to the favorites in the former years around 4 minutes faster
  • Bike: the first 12 k Natascha was almost flying; she made already  up 1:30min. on the recent worldchampion Michellie Jones. She was behind her 6:30. By her last 3 Ironman victories at this same moment at the race she was between 9 to 12 minutes behind the leader. In this years Ironman Southafrica she turned this to a 25 min. lead. So everything seemed perfect fort this race.
  • The crash:
    Her coach and partner Toni Hasler was on the race course when he heard the first message in the radio. The topfavorite Natascha Badmann should have had an accident because of a motorcyclist?! In further news there was always said that she was pressed of the road by a motorcyclist so she had to avoid him and crashed heavily. We still could not figure out who lanced this message. Actually Natascha had in her extremly aerodynamic position with a very restricted view field to avoid a motorcyclist to not crash with him, where she collided with a street cone and crashed down. At this moment by her onw perception she drove more or less 60km/h. Her helmet and the frame of her bike was totally broken, she suffered skin injuries and explorations on the whole body and she had a lot of pain on both shoulders and on her back. But Natascha didn’t want to give up then „give up would be much more painful“  
  • The give up:
    With a replacement bike which she received half an hour later, she continued in spite of extremly pain the race fort he next 30 miles. When she passed Toni Hasler on the race course he convinced her to give up definitly the race to avoid any further injuries.  

2. Medical stocktacking
Diagnosis of Andre Gösele from the Crossclinik in Basel, switzerland / Leader of the Olympic Medical Center:

  • very heavy and complex injuries on both shoulders especially on the left side: Capsule, ligaments and injuries at the tendons, break of the articulatio acronomioclavicularis
  • heavy skin injuries (almost to compare with burned skin) as well as a broken rib on the back and many bruises. 

It is unimaginable that someone with this sort of injuries and the pain generally can continue on a bike. This is only explicable because of the very mental strength of Natascha and her 100% focus on the competition.  

Next steps: It seems that she will have to operate within the next few days in the crossclinic in Basel by a team of specialists. She will have to stay around 10 days in the hospital.
Reha: Andre Gösele said that by not sportive persons the recuparation will take 3 to 6 months. The goal in the case of Natascha is of course the recovery back to a competive athlete.    

3. Future / goals  
The personal goal of Natascha is to come out of this deepest valley of her sportive career and come up even stronger. Her main goal is the participation at the anniversary of Ironman Hawaii 2008 which will take place for the 30st time.

More clarifications needed

Natascha Badmann has been yesterday almost the whole day in the hospital, they made various investigation, today she is with a neurologist for the last clarifications. More infos will follow as soon as we get the report from the doctors.

Interview Natascha Badmann after coming home

Motional moments yesterday at the airport in zurich. A handicapped Natascha Badmann (40), the fallen iron lady of hawaii, arrived from a adventure whose consequences are not known yet. A start at the Ironman Hawaii next year is not sure after her heavy crash from last weekend.

In an interview with a local newspaper, she tells us about having a lot of pain. Not only physical pain, also much of psychic pain. At the moment she is not able at all to move her left arm, and her right shoulder she only moves with pain.

At this very moment she is with the specialists in the hospital. This evening / tomorrow we will know more. Read here all the news.

Back to switzerland

At saturday, october 20th 2007, Natascha Badmann and Toni Hasler will travel back to switzerland. They are going to land at 12:55 h at the airport zurich.

News from KONA

Natascha Badmann has by now left the hospital. The doctor says that the injuries we last at least 3 more month and for the next 6 weeks it will still hurt quite a lot. As soon as she is back in switzerland she will have to go to an other check up by her doctor.

Of course Natascha Badmann is very disappointed about what happend. She told us that her swim was quite good, and on the bike she was not cycling, no she was flying! She just felt great and made up already one minute on the first 10 k's. And then by k 20 this crash...

Premiere for Natascha

Last Sunday Natascha has completed her first kilometers on bike in Gran Canaria.
She still felt a little tensed up but with the aid of a special bar everything worked well. Natascha Badmann now stays for three weeks in Gran Canaria  where she trains for being fit for contests again.

Instead of celebrating her 7th victory Natascha Badmann is in the hospital with a broken rib

A motorcyclist has prevented the try for the 7th victory at Ironman Hawaii!

At k 20 on the bike, a motorcyclist came so close to Natascha Badmann so she had to make a turn and colided with a rode cone. Her bike and helmet was totally broken, so she must have had a quite bad crash. But as we know our iron lady she is not to give up so fast. She ordered a replacement bike to continue the race, although she had very much pain. So after about 30 min. she continued the race for more than 40 miles. Until her trainer and partner Toni Hasler stopped her. He actually had to beg her off the course. At his moment they are on their way to the hospital. It looks like she will have to make a longer training break. She has explorations, something with the ligaments of her shoulder and a broken rip.

But as a very llittle comfort, as the americans write nicley: „Natascha Badmann will likely increase her legendary status here in Kona based on her latest efforts“

The word "give up" doesn't exist in the vocabulary of Natascha Badmann, just as we know her.

KONA-News - Nationalparade

At the Ironman-Nationalparade on Kona there have been almost 100 swiss athletes and companions. This group was cited by Natascha Badmann which earned the biggest applause. The swiss group was one of the biggest and therefore a highlight of this years nationalparade.

KONA-News by Natascha Badmann

At monday i've had had an interview with NBC that was planned by the organizers. Yesterday tuesday i've graduated my last hard trainingsession, that means 40 minutes intensive bikeride, after lunchbreak i had to do an intensive 45min. run. At 4pm i did my last fotoshooting with one of my sponsors, Newton Running. After that i could enjoy of a massage and in the evening, as always, Toni made a fantastic meal for me.

And today is a real happyday for me, finally i'm eating again carbohydrates, in form of potatoes! The last 2 days i've eaten very low-carb to empty my storage, and from today on i can fill them up again, from morning till evening with potatoes! This evening Toni will cook one of my favourite meals, "rösti" with egg! The next 3 days i'm eating again more carbohydrates, but more info later on.

KONA-News - what has changed?

How was the preparation for this year's Ironman Hawaii?
Was everything the same as last year or have there been any changes?

Some stuff has been optimized...
As for example the new race dress, receiving 10% less water (Info >>), the new aerodynamic helmet, conceived as well for the side winds on hawaii. As well is the position on the bike even lower and more aerodynamic, and the new running shoe, lighter and from the new barfoot line (newton running). And that the drink bottle doesn't spick out, like it happend last year, it will be fixed by tape. The nutrition for the race day has changed from bars to gel.

"The last tests have been better than in spring" says Toni Hasler, who included new more fun in the trainingssession. "It is not possible only train hard all the time, for me, the motivation from outside is a big help" tells Natascha Badmann.

This week she will train only up to 2 hours daily.

"Every competition is something special to me", tells us Natascha Badmann, "i'm looking for the perfect race, trying to push the borders even farer away and i'm discovering sides at me that i'm not able to discover in the every day life".

It is possible, to be sure without the sound of the ocean in the background, but at least live at TV.

The german TV channel ARD will be transmitting LIVE from 00.15 the last hours of Ironman Hawaii 2007.

Travel back to Switzerland

Tomorrow, Wednesday 26th september 2007, Natascha Badmann and Toni Hasler will be travelling back to Switzerland. The weather was perfect during the 3 weeks, last preparations were made, her form is great! They will be travelling confident to Hawaii...

Putting the finishing touches on Gran Canaria

Natascha Badmann and her coach Toni Hasler will be on Gran Canaria from Wednesday on to put the finishing touches to the training. During these three weeks, she'll perfect her great fitness.

Sovereign victory at the Uster Triathlon!

Uster Triathlon (VW-ciruit) 1.5k swim - 40k bike - 10k run.

Natascha Badmann lost  more than four minutes in the swim leg and left the Greifensee on second place behind the 25-year-old Melanie Annaheim from Lostorf. A strong performance on the bike leg brought her close to first place. She showed her class on the run leg and passed Melanie Annaheim. Natascha Badmann crossed the finish line with a two minutes lead on Melanie Annaheim and, as usual, with a smile. Third place for Jaqueline Uebelhardt.

Natascha Badmann was very pleased about this victory: „It's by no means a matter of course that I win. I was very much greatful to have this fantastic support from the crowd on the run leg. I always enjoy being here“, declared the happy winner, being right in the middle of her preparation for the Hawaii Ironman.

3 days to the Uster Triathlon...

Natascha Badmann will do her best next Sunday, August 26th, and try to fill the crowd with enthusiasm, like she did in Schaffhausen on August 11th.

She'll run this race just out of a strenuous workout week, similar to the competition in Schaffhausen. In fact, this triathlon has not been particularly prepared and will be considered as an intensive workout unit.

1671 girls started on Sunday August 19th 2007 to the 2007 Iron Girl Columbia Women's Triathlon. Natascha Badmann sent a video message over the ocean to all these girls, to congratulate and motivate them.
